The Centre offers a wide range of IT classes and courses using brand new computers.  Courses on offer in the Summer Term 2008 are as follows:

 

Digital Photography Editing Beginners

Learn all the skills required from taking your photographs to using them for a variety of purposes.  Learn how to store them on your computer: edit and improve them, then perhaps e-mail them to relatives or use them in birthday cards or party invitations.

   Digital Photography Editing Intermediate 1

This class is for those who have already undertaken at least one term of classes and will introduce new more advanced techniques.

         

Digital Photography Editing Intermediate 2

This class is for those who have already undertaken at least one term of classes and will introduce new more advanced techniques.

 

Computing for Beginners

A gentle introduction to a wide range of computer applications including word processing; spreadsheets; database and internet.

 

Computing for Complete Beginners

These 3 week courses for complete beginners will be limited to only 4 students to allow plenty of individual attention for each student in a gentle, supportive atmosphere.

  

 

 

 

 

 Flexible Computing Plus!

 This course is for complete beginners or those more advanced.  You can choose:

 v     to study for a certificate or just for your own interest

 v     which skills you want to learn: vocational packages leading towards     employment or useful skills for leisure pursuits

 v     when you want to come

 v     how often you want to come

 

 

 

  

 

 

The choice of certificates are Information Technology; Office          Applications 1 & 2; Work Processing 1, 2 & 3; Desktop  Publishing. Non certificate skills could include: Internet; Downloading Music; Using EBay; Word Processing and more.

 

IT Essentials 1

This course will – run in conjunction with Cisco Systems – is an intensive, vocational course which gives people a recognised qualification for work as a computer technician.

This course includes:

 Installation, configuration and upgrading PC hardware; diagnosing and troubleshooting PC hardware; preventative maintenance; motherboard, processors and memory; printers; basic networking; operating system fundamentals; installation, configuration and upgrading operating systems; diagnosing and troubleshooting operating systems; networks.

     

 

 

IT Essentials Taster

A one off session for anyone who would like to know about what’s involved in the upcoming or future IT Essentials courses before considering applying.  Find out all about the curriculum and what can be gained from doing the course.

  

The new programme for the Autumn Term will be available in July/August.

  Saturday Morning Programme – taster sessions held in various venues throughout the local community.  

Sessions offered are:        

  •  Digital Photography

  • Computing for the Terrified
  • Internet and E-Mail for Complete Beginners

  Platform Adult Learning Centre

‘Introduction to Computers’ classes are offered in Platform in Wester Hailes and at Pentland Community Education Centre in Oxgangs.  These classes are offered as short courses. The classes are run in small groups so you will get plenty of support to help you acquire the basic skills.  A free crèche is available.  The courses on offer are as follows:

  

 

 

Beginners – e-mail and internet basics. 

Post-Beginners – word processing, e-mail and internet advanced. 

SQA Certificate Courses Access 3 Intermediate 2.

WHALE Art Agency

European Computer Driving Licence (ECDL) modules run in association with Telford College are currently on offer at WHALE.  There is a charge for these modules but if you are unemployed or in receipt of benefits, you may be eligible for a fee waiver.  The ECDL is a widely recognised qualification which will give students an introduction to the basics of computing and the use of Microsoft Office packages e.g. Word, Access, Excel etc.   Contact WHALE on  458 3267 for further information.

 South West Community Learning & Development Summer School Programme

The South West Community Learning and Development Classes organise an annual Summer School.  Sessions will include IT, digital photography, creative writing, arts and crafts!  Contact Community Learning & Development on 458 5959 for further details.

City of Edinburgh Council Adult Education Class Programme

Computing Classes will also be on offer at Carrickvale Community Education Centre, Saughton Mains Street, (443 6971) and Sighthill Community Education Centre, Sighthill Wynd (453 6078) through the Adult Education Programme in the Autumn Term commencing September 2008.  New computing equipment has been installed in these centres.  Contact the Centres for further information on classes.

 

Clovenstone Community Centre (453 4561) has also installed new computing equipment and a programme of computing classes is currently under development. Contact Clovenstone for further information.

   

Computing classes are also held in Currie Community High School (449 5922) and Balerno Community High School (477 7733) throughout the year.  Contact the schools on the above telephone numbers for further details.

Stevenson College offer a wide variety of certificated computing courses on a full-time, part-time, evening class, open learning and flexible learning basis.  There is also the opportunity to study for the European Computing Driving Licence (ECDL) through Open Learning.  For full details of courses, fees etc contact the Student Advice Centre on the above tel no.  You can apply to Learndirect for an Individual Learning Account which can give you up to £200 per annum to contribute towards course fees.  Fee waivers may also available to students who are in receipt of benefits.
